On Saturday Southampton is having a release event for their Russian Imperial Stout. They’ve only brewed 250 bottles (750 ml, corked and caged). Spencer Neibuhr put these bottles together by hand. Rich speculates on the beermalt mailing list today that Southampton is trying to generate some buzz with this limited release. Seems that scarce beers are highly valued in beer-geekdom. For example, the Westvleteren ales’s popularity is inversely proportional to their availability, placing that brewery on the top ten list for both BeerAdvocate and RateBeer. Recently, BeerAdvocate, in its magazine, condemned the “illegal purchase” of Westvleteren beers from unscrupulous resellers dealing through eB*y and other outlets. Rich suggests that BeerAdvocate and RateBeer should “delist” the beers to help control the hype.

This happens in the wine world too and pubs like Wine Spectator feed it. They will give a wine a 98 rating, but only 40 cases were made…it’s really doing readers a disservice because they simply aren’t going to be able to get this wine…so why hype it so?
I will have a few bottles of this stout in hand next week, however
